"For the duration of the past two semesters, I have spent my time developing a complex pool of design and art pieces that cohesively underscore a narrative of my own creation. This world I conceived in September 2009 has gradually taken on a life of its own, and consists of many elements including: production art, concept art, character design, environment maps and design documents. In keeping with the spirit of my original Thesis, I believe the best way to showcase this body of work is as a three-dimensional, interactive installation."

"On the following pages I have created a diagram of how I would like my work to be shown during the Spring 2010 Commencement Exhibition. It depicts three 18”x36”, framed oil paintings hung on a gallery wall behind a 76”x40”x15” wooden altar. I plan to construct this custom altar on my own."

"Behind the oil paintings I want to have long fabric runners, which will be attached to the gallery ceiling and extend the entire length of the wall. The runners are important because they correspond to the color palette and imagery of the triptych, thereby tying the paintings into the space more effectively."

"I would also like to have objects, including food and candles, on the altar and I plan to encourage viewers to leave personal offerings as well."

As an added bonus, here's a visual layout of the process I underwent to paint this piece. I experimented with a new mode of construction this time, and I feel the final painting benefited in a really interesting way. I worked entirely digitally from a 3D model I constructed, and I decided to share the evolution. I'm, admittedly, very happy with the results.

Divine Color Studies

I put together some quick digital color studies today for two oil paintings I've been working on. My process is pretty simple: I establish an initial palette in Photoshop, toy with it, and then I ultimately (despite my best efforts not to...) construct a composition consisting of mostly neutral/warm tones.

And the final color mocks:

Typically, I like to let my palette develop organically when painting. I have color schemes I'm inclined to, and I find that too much pre-consideration can take discovery out of the process.
However, these paintings were heavily influenced by the religious works of Caravaggio and Jan van Eyck, so I had more factors to consider.

To succeed as a triptych, they have to be cohesive as a unit, as well as independent within themselves; color is integral to this. I've spent more time than usual on these studies because the message I want to communicate to the viewer about each character can be highly affected by my palette choices. As of right now, I'm relatively pleased.

I finally finished a painting for the opening screen of Zombi5ed that, due to my insane time restraints, is just acceptable enough to submit. I'll try and post my character sheets after this semester concludes and when I have time to complete them to my satisfaction.

...I have to admit I'm going to miss being able to say I'm a student at Johns Hopkins.

After tedious internal debate, the final cast for Zombi5ed has been selected. Hooray.

I quickly threw down some colors over my orthos in an attempt to hash out a palette. Apparently, the engine we're using to code the game is fickle and so I have to maintain a limited tonal range. I can't complain though, this ultimately helps me because I've been struggling to keep an "animated" aesthetic while designing these characters and would continually get sucked into small areas of detail. I think being forced to work with less will really help the final piece. I hope.

They're far from complete, but it is nice to see them lined up in a row like this.

I spent the last four months studying 3D animation, lithography, and bookmaking in Osaka, Japan. After working digitally for so long (animation, aside), it was a fantastic opportunity for me to learn craft-based, traditional techniques I don't have access to in the States. Honestly, I'm still in awe of the experience and I'm so excited to use what I learned in future projects.

I made six editions of six prints from fourteen plates. I also made two artist's books, with a case and an accordion binding, respectively, to hold my best work.

Final TIME FIGHT! Character Designs

Here they are, all six final character designs for 'TIME FIGHT!'. The premise of this video game is exceedingly simple and is reminiscent of classic arcade-style fighter games like Street Fighter or Samurai Shodown. Each character represents a different time period and wields a weapon unique to his or her fighting style.

Mammoth: "There was once a time in history when all one needed to ensure his survival was immense size... and some sort of large clubbing implement..."

LYD 0.91: "There will be a time in the distant future where one won't need cosmetic surgery; a new synthetic face will be surprisingly affordable..."

Jack: "There was once a time in history when cigars and whiskey were medicinal.."

Francois: "There was a time in history when most men toiled long hours for enough money to afford a powdered wig and some rouge..."
